Many Americans are working from home for the first time. The change can be unsettling as people try to find a new normal, set up systems and concentrate. How do you stay productive?
Cheryl Duncan & Company has operated a home-based business for years, working remotely with consultants and clients. We thought that we might share some tips for if you’re newly working from home…
1. Take comfort in the familiar. Things may have been upended out there but you’re safe at home. With your stuff.
2. Find a place to work and get your work tools together. Your laptop, files, stapler, pens and all need a stable location. Don’t move your office around your home, working with the laptop from the bed, couch, the kitchen table, etc. If you do, you may start to feel like you’re on duty all the time as every space will be associated with work.
3. Decide what your schedule is. Work during work hours. Is that pile of laundry calling your name? Let it wait. Same for that dust. And those dishes. This is probably the hardest thing to stick to, but it’s really helpful.
4. Watch your neck. Looking down on a laptop can send you to the chiropractor. So invest in a laptop stand and remote keyboard and mouse so that you’re not bending over to view the screen.
5. Separate out your personal stuff–those piles of paper that accumulate–ensuring that they don’t mix with your work.
6. Unfortunately, you’re now custodial services, too, along with your regular job—so consider making a round of cleaning part of your schedule at the top or end of the day.
7. Too quiet? Figure out whether listening to music, TV or podcasts is a distraction or not. We do a lot of writing and have found that we can’t compose well with these on. But they’re great when we’re researching or sending out emails.
8. Social networking can be great but it can suck you into a vortex. Sometimes you need to access these as part of your job, but watch that you limit your time on them.
9. Lonely? Use tools like Zoom and social networks—or the phone—to check in with others who are navigating this current reality as well. They’ll be happy to hear from you.
10. Take your social distancing walks, too.
11. Learn to stop. Yes, you’ve done enough for today and we will do as we say here, we promise, just as soon as we get a little more accomplished.
12. And don’t forget to ditch the pajamas!
